Although it’s not my first time to celebrate Eid al-Fitr in Belakang Padang, Batam, Riau Islands, this is my first experience to perform special congregational prayers known as Salaat al-Eid in that island. In previous years, my family and I usually execute Salaat al-Eid in Batam first, after that we went to Belakang Padang.
This year, we came early to Belakang Padang – we want to felt the Eid al-Fitr prayer at a field, namely Indra Sakti. Last year, my family and I executed Salaat al-Eid at a mosque near the house.
At a glance, Indra Sakti, Belakang Padang it’s not really different with the fields in another city. It’s different because Indra Sakti is a field in a little island, near from Singapore. Its also the centre for community activities in that island. Besides, when in another city, field is just used for additional place of Salaat al-Eid, in Belakang Padang, that field is the only place for prayer – especially for Eid al Adha and Eid al-Fitr.
According to one of Kampung Bugis resident, Juniarti, when the weather is not raining, Saalat Eid al Fitr and Eid alAdha is always held at Indra Sakti. Meanwhile, when it rains, people will pray at the mosque. FYI, almost every few meters, there is a mosque.
According to Juniarti, Belakang Padang residnts perfom salaat at Indra Sakti to strengthen the relationship. All Muslims in Belakang Padang will pray in the field. As a result the field, consisting of a football, volleyball, and basketball courts are full of Muslim.
